L'Atalante, 1934
Believed to be the poster for Jean Vigo's classic French film starring Jean Dasté, Dita Parlo and Michel Simon, L'Atalante was a commercial failure when it was released in September 1934. Critics called it "amateurish, self-indulgent and morbid." Vigo, who suffered from tuberculosis and was bedridden at times during filming, died in October at the age of 29, shortly after the film's first run. Today, L'Atalante is considered one of the greatest films of all time.
